Skaife brings glittering career to a close at Oran Park

03.12.2008

The “Red Army” will turn out in force this weekend at Oran Park to farewell their general, Holden hero Mark Skaife, who will retire from full-time driving duties at the conclusion of the event to close the book on a glittering 214-round career spanning 22 seasons.
The retirement of Skaife, the most successful driver of the V8 Supercar era, is set to overshadow both the concluding event of the 2008 championship season, as well as the occasion of the last round to be held at the much-loved Western Sydney circuit.

It’s fitting that the curtain should come down on Skaife’s career at Oran Park, where he has won six times previously, including four consecutive rounds from 1999 to 2002 as part of an unmatched streak of seven straight HRT wins.

Skaife has cemented his position as one of the greats of Australian sport by amassing five V8 Supercar championships, five Bathurst 1000 victories, three Australian drivers’ championships and a record 40 round wins. By the end of this weekend he will have chalked up 214 rounds, the second-highest in championship history.

Skaife said the occasion would be tinged with sadness but he would also view it as a celebration. “There are parts of this weekend that I can foresee are going to be difficult, it’s always tough when you’re saying goodbye to something that has been such a massive part of your life for so long,” he said.

“But equally I’m looking forward to going out there and saying thanks to all of my fans and to my crew in the best way I can. I’m honoured and humbled by all the support I’ve had over my career and especially since I announced my retirement, so I’m certainly going to enjoy that side of it.

“A lot of my family and friends are going to be attending this weekend and Oran Park has been a pretty special place for me and for the Holden Racing Team in years gone by, so it’s fitting that this is where it ends.”

Skaife said he had never dwelt upon his long list of achievements but as he moved on to the next phase of his career, the time was approaching to take stock. “I’ve always said that I don’t really pay much attention to the record books, that’s what retirement’s for,” he said. “It’s important to close one chapter in the life of M. Skaife and move on to the next challenge, and that’s what this weekend is about for me.”

His teammate Garth Tander, the defending series champion who joined Toll HRT this year, paid tribute to Skaife. “It’s been a privilege to spend 12 months learning as much as I can from him,” Tander said. “You can’t be a teammate to someone who has won five Bathursts and five championships and not learn something from them, so for me it was an honour to be able to be in the same team.”

With such a heavy focus on Skaife this weekend, Tander said the team needed to stay focused on its immediate goals. “There will be a lot of attention on Skaifey, and deservedly so. But we’ve still got some jobs to do within the team as far as securing third place for me in the championship, as well as scoring points in the teams championship, because pit lane position for next year is going to be important.”

Tander also took the opportunity to recognise the stellar year of his Ford rival Jamie Whincup, whom he edged out to win last year’s championship and who will almost certainly secure the title this weekend.

“At the end of the day he’s done a great job,” he said. “You can’t deny the speed he’s had all year, the fightback from Hamilton and the run that he’s had from Bathurst onwards.

“He’s gone fantastically well, it’s a credit to the way he has come back from the disappointment of losing last year’s championship by a small margin. He’s kept his head down and the whole team has done a good job, so you can’t begrudge them the way they’ve gone about this year’s championship, they’re deserving winners.”

Joint statement by Tom Walkinshaw and Mark Skaife

01.12.2008

Tom Walkinshaw and Mark Skaife today reached agreement after several weeks of discussions on arrangements for Walkinshaw to assume full ownership and running of the Holden Racing Team.
The decision, which is subject to approval by V8 Supercars Australia, is effective immediately.

Walkinshaw has requested Skaife to remain as an ambassador for the Holden Racing Team, reflecting his achievements for the team and the sport.

In addition, Skaife will remain as a major ambassador for the Holden brand and its products.

While the details of the agreement will remain confidential, no debt or other outstanding financial commitments will remain in relation to Skaife’s team involvement.

It follows Skaife’s announcement on 29 October that he intended to retire at the end of the 2008 season to explore opportunities inside and outside of motor racing.

The decision will leave Skaife free to concentrate on his final round of full-time racing at Oran Park in Sydney this weekend after a 21-year driving career.

Walkinshaw today said that he welcomed the resolution and that he and Skaife looked forward to an exciting future for HRT.

Skaife said: “Tom and I have been working together on this for several weeks. It’s disappointing that our negotiations were inaccurately reported just as we were reaching agreement in the best interests of Holden Racing Team.”

Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Reuss, said the outcome would help to keep HRT as a benchmark racing team while ensuring Skaife retained involvement with the brands he had represented for so long

I've been buying mainland papers for a few weeks trying to get information on that last article. It is good to see HRT will still be alright. Although it is sad to see that Skaife has lost his home. Having met Skaife at Symmons, and seeing him in few interviews, I can say he is a pretty genuine bloke, just under a lot of pressure.

They also mentioned that a 'major sponsor' has defaulted on HRT. Major sponsors for HRT are HSV, Holden, Mobil, Toll and Dodo. HSV and Holden would never pull out, nor would Mobil I would like to assume, however Toll and Dodo... I dare say Dodo contribute far less to HRT than Toll, being as there is only small signwriting on the cars and a breast-patch on the race suits, where as Toll have a whole darn car! If Toll have pulled their money it will be a vary bare looking car 15 for 2009.

yes well done Jamie and 888... seems to fly in fords face of pulling out of factory support cause they thought they were not good enough and went with SBR and FPR, I guess ford is kicking themselves now!!!

and I think Garth needs to see a psych thats the second botched start I have seen this year methinks his leg is getting a bit jumpy when the flag drops..I am quite looking forward to next year with Jamie having the number 1 on his door and going around the mountain again with Craig for another win
