Nissan GT-R confirms Targa appearance in 2008

Monday November 26, 2007

Fresh from its world-wide unveiling at the Tokyo Motor Show in October, the new Nissan GT-R will make its Targa Tasmania debut in 2008.

The car has been entered by motorsport identity Tony Alford and will run in the stand-out Donut King colours.

The GT-R is described by Nissan as “an ultimate supercar for anyone, anywhere, at anytime”.

The car features a newly developed Premium Midship package, including the world’s first independent transaxle 4WD developed independently by Nissan.

Under the hood, the Nissan GT-R features an all-new 3.8-litre twin turbo V6 “VR38” engine, producing 353kW at 6400rpm and maximum torque of 588Nm from 3200 to 5200rpm.

Targa Tasmania event director, Mark Perry, is delighted that the GT-R will be on show to motorsport fans in Tasmania when the event is held from April 15-22.

“This car will be, I’m sure, very popular with spectators and fellow competitors,” Perry said.

“It really ensures Targa is a great showcase for all things automotive. At one end of the spectrum we have a huge range of classic cars, dating back to the 1930s, then we have the latest performance cars that have only just been released.”

Not just that, there is 3 reasons, that I heard, for the event to change.

1) They wanted to run it similar to classic adelaide and have the majority of the event centralised in one spot.
2) The roads up north are much better than down south (blame the councils).
3) The cost of accomodation was a problem. The competitors came down here to run the Southern Loop on the Friday, so they need accomodation for the Thurs and Fri nights. Then up to Burnie Saturday night and back in Hobart Sun/Mon nights. The hotels down here wouldn't let competitors book 4 nights down here and without booking the Saturday night as well, so they were forced to pay the night down here, and pay ridiculous prices in Burnie for the Saturday night.

These were the main complaints from competitors over the years.

Due to the positive feedback from the competitors it looks like the event will run the same for 09 with the possiblity of one or 2 more southern stages.

if the travel and accomodation was an issue why not just do all the north in one go then travel south for the saturday sunday?

I will admit the roads down here do needs some work (not that i have seen the one's up north much)

regards

Not sure why they didn't do that with accom, seems a smart idea.

I agree the roads down south are crap but it's not so much the councils fault but the Federal and State govt's more marginal electrets up north so more pork barrells but heh good on ya enjoy!!!
by the way I wasn't jealous or bitchin it's just that I miss them down here and I did take the ol ute to help big bro map out Mt Arrowsmth down last year's Targa (was great hearing her purr through the gorges)
