I notice that a lot of people have battery and electrical system woes on this site. This is not helped by large stereos and the like. I've found the following site extremely useful for not only car batteries but for mobile phones and laptop batteries too.

Firstly, this is the article specific to charging lead acid batteries. The type found in cars. Some of the information is a little technical so please ask if you do not understand. Once you understand this however you'll save yourself a lot of time and money by knowing what to look for rather than paying someone else.

Charging the Lead-Acid battery.

The remainder of the articles can be found here at the Battery University.

Another good investment is a good quality battery charger. After trying many different sorts, ranging from $30-$300 I've found the Projecta AC600 to be far far superior to anything else. Cost on these is about $60 so RRP would be $80-100. I'm not sure if Repco sell them. I got mine from Carswell Auto Electrical in Launceston. These chargers are really well built and are a LOT more robust than battery chargers worth 3 times the price.

Say if you had a battery that's been flat for the better part of 2 years.... what's the chances of it coming back to life if you charge it for a week or so?
