What colour is the car? Odd question I know, but Pioneer TS-C160R 16cm 2-Way 250 Watt Component Speakers @ RRP: $529.00 sound great, and have reviewed very well. Yellow cones though.
These Clarions also review well: SRS1686 16 CM [6 1/4″] 2-WAY COMPONENT SPEAKER SYSTEM
Other options are Alpine Type-Xs, MB Quart or Focal. Even cheap MB Quart splits will sound better than expensive other brands, however quality of the sound is highly dependant on the signal they get.
All component speakers run better off an amplifier, and if you're spending $500 on a pair then they are designed to be amped, guaranteed. A cheap amp will work (read: US Audio or Jaycar) but something in the next price bracket will work even better, lower distortion etc.
The 2 biggest pieces of advice I will give, and this goes for any audio components be it home or car:
1. Don't buy anything you've not listened to. EBay might have bargains, but even a $1000 set of speakers might sound s**t to your ears. Audition EVERYTHING. Also, if you don't like the sound DONT BUY IT! All brands look the same in a door, don't buy Alpine because your mate told you so, buy what sounds good to your ears.
2. Take one of your CD's when you go to audition the speakers. There is no point in letting the saleperson demo the speakers with the latest Nelly single when you listen to Tool all the time. Typically sales people will demo with something that makes the product sounds good, there is no point in listening to something poppy if you listen to metal, the type of sounds the speakers must reproduce are totally different. Let the sales person demo some speakers, if you like the sound of a few pairs then say "OK, I like those, here is some of my music, can we just put that on, just so I can listen to them with my music".
Preferably use a bought CD as these will be far better quality recordings than any MP3 disk, no matter how good it has been ripped and burnt.
Finally, if you listen to a $149 pair of speakers and they sound better to you that a $999 pair of speakers buy the cheaper ones and go to the pub. Thick and thin of it is you're the one who has to listen to it all the time, bugger what anyone else says you should buy or should like.

If/when I buy my next set of speakers I'll be looking very closely at these 2:
Focal 165V2 6.5" Component Set. @ about $400-$450
MB Quart RVF 216 6.5" Components @ about $500
These would be the ultimate, Boston Acoustics Z9, but they're about $1499 a pair

well in my opiniion ALPINE. thats all i have to say.
What sort of speakers do you run in your car??
I have also found that when comparing speakers you obviously have to go to different stores as there isnt a store that stocks all brands.
This then becomes another variable that needs to be taken into consideration as they all run different Headunits and amps.
Some have even been sneaky enough to discreetly run a sub as well so it appears the speakers have more bottom end.
It pays to make note and set all the settings on each headunit back to zeros and check rms ratings of the headunit and amps to compare properly.
Well, thats my way of looking at it at least.

The days of hiding subs in demo boards are gone as far as I know, however every demo board will have an amp hidden in it. Basically this isn't cheating so far as helping. Think of it this way, the 30watts running each speaker in your car only has to cover a small space, that same 30watts will sound weak in a large room when demo-ing the speakers on a board.
I don't care what anyone says, you can't make a perfect stereo with all one brand. Period. No one brand does everything perfectly. Alpine makes good signal processing gear, their amplifiers are damn good too, but other brands do better subs and speakers. That's not only my opinion, but that of a few dealers also.

I agree with what your saying, I was merely pointing out that you need to check and see that each time you listen to a set of speakers you are in fact comparing apples with apples.
No point in listening to what could be a fantastic set of speakers yet are merely playing off a headunit and then going to the next store and comparing to a set of speakers that are being run off a 100w rms Amp.
and as you say each brand has their strong points in way of components and as such could assist in making a weaker set of speakers appear better than what they really are. Thats why I suggest setting everything back to zero so it taking everything but the basic headunit and speakers out of the equation.
Just my way of doing it.
