Ok, I'm about to be in the market for a VN commodore, will be trying to pick one up just after new years I hope.

I've been trying to find out, which is better the series 1 or series 2?

Basicaly what I want from the car so you can decide better;

Good reliability as I firstly wanna try make the car look good, can't do that if all my money goes to fixing the engine.
It wont constantly be thrashed, but might give it to her here an there, ya know, as you do. :P
Which responds better to minor engine modifactions?
Also, which has more guts for the get-up-and-go?

Another question, auto's are boring, but I will buy an auto if I like the rest of the car ect and get the manual converted into it. How much would I be looking at for a 5spd conversion?

One last question, for now. What exact date did they start making the series 2?

Also by just after new years I should have roughly 3k to spend.

I'd imagine it would probably be cheaper to find one already manual as hard as it would be than to convert the auto.

If you want a manual, buy a manual.
VN engine had different cranks from auto to manual, so a conversion will quickly become very expensive.
If your not looking to buy until after New Years, you have a bit of time to look for one.

yeah the money youre going to spend to convert an auto to manual.....youre better off to pay a bit more for one thats already manual.Be very expensive conversion

And get a series two they have a better engine than the series one

Mid 1990 the series 2 came in(i am pretty sure i am right, but someone correct me if wrong)

The series two have the VP motor..revised and better flowing intake manifold..better ignition/coil pack set up.They have 130kw to the series ones 125kw..better cam shaft..better pushrods and valves and hydraulic high flow tappets..revised and upgraded cooling system...they have a better auto gearbox...the intake has the bellmouth installed to make the engine less rough..exhaust manifolds are cast instead of beign a multiple piece unit..revised fuel pump...

hope this helps pm me or add me to msn if you want more detailed info

Yeah, new it was mid 90s, just wanted to know what exact date. :)

Sounds like I'm going to be after a; VN Calais, Series 2, 5spd, less than 220 thou klms.. Hmm, is it just me or does my expectations for all that under 3k sound unreasonable?

Thanks for the help though, didn't relise how much better the series 2 acturaly was.
