Righto as in members rides I have just done a VT front brake upgrade to my car. What I did was email one of the guys selling the upgrade kits to see if I could just buy a set of spacing shims to fit the discs to the hub off him. He agreed.

then I went to Rodney Hyland in Wynyard and bought a set of brand new front disc, from the factory off the cars that have had the premium brake upgrade from the factory. Also bought a set of second hand calipers from a wrecked car.

A set of new pads what ever you chose.

Shims $50 to my door
Disc $80 for the pair
Caliper $40 for the pair.

From there one of my mechanics mates fitted it all up for. just all bolted straight up. I'm a bit of a cheque book mechanic myself so I cant tell you the finer details. But thought I would tell you all cause it seems to be a relativly cheap upgrade done that way.

Was just wondering if anyone on here knows if there is much mucking around on fitting up a VT onwards master cylinder to a VS?

The brakes just feel a bit too spongy for me at the moment.

VT master cylinder into VT is not to hard for anyone with half clue.
The VT master cylinder will bolt straight onjto your booster, however there is some fine adjustment to be made on the push rod to get the correct depth on it prior to final installation of the master cylinder.

Putting one onto a VR is a bit more complex though as VR's use a different brake booster than VS.
I have done this conversion to my VR and I used the VT booster and master cylinder.
To get the booster to fit however you have to get a new mount bracket made to mount it to the firewall as on VTs the booster mounts direct to the firewall.
(I have seen the existing VR mounting bracket modified to suit, but was not really happy with the finished product).
Also when fitting the master cylinder to VRs it is necessary to bend your brake lines to suit the different outputs from the master cylinder (simply done by bending around a large socket to prevent crimping of the lines)

If these are VT discs, the centre hole is 71.5mm, and Vs is 70mm. When fitting VT rotors on to VR/VS models they will not locate properly on the hub and can move about.
Most VT caliper conversions will have a spongy pedal unless you use a VT master cyl.

Alternatively you can buy VT style rotors from DBA with the internal hub diameter to suit VR/VS. I can't remember the part number at the moment but have it at home if anyone was interested in doing it this way

Ok, ok, you got me again!!! I didnt know you could get shims to do that, i thought he meant shims to shim the caliper but now i think about it, that was for VLT models... (im having a stressful day, dont mind me lol)

Didn't purposely set out to prove you wrong, just threads like these are a good guide for people, so best to keep the information as accurate as possible ;)

Ancient Thread, But may be of use to someone!

Front-end Disc brake and caliper upgrade for VS commodores:

You will need:

2 x 298mm front discs/rotors - Use DBA040 for Standard VT Type or DB040B for ones to use with

VS hub - Approx $100-$150 a pair

2 x adaptor shimms for the front hubs - Approx $40 to $50

2 x VT, VX, VY or VZ front calipers - Approx $100+

*** May also need the VT/VX/VY/VZ Brake lines to go with it, as i've been tole there is a difference in the fluid line length. Try to get the original lines with the upgraded calipers.

A new set of front Pads to suit - $30 to $120+

The original discs/rotors are around 268mm
The new setup will require stock 296mm discs/rotors

*** Some people have told me that the standard VS rotors WILL work, but don't have the braking patch that the VT and upwards type will have due to the larger
disc diameter. I cannot confirm that they will work/fit and would not recommend doing so!

Will VT Discs fit on to your VS outright?:

1. No the hubs are different
2. No the rotors do not interchange

Rotors To Buy For Conversion:

DBA040B rotors.... the B stands for 70mm centre hole (in this case) which is correct for a standard VS hub.

If you used plain old s/h VT rotors or DBA040 rotors they would have the 71.5mm centre hole. Its possible to buy concentric spacer rings to take the difference but if your buying new discs just buy the right ones first time.

So you use the hubs that are on the car....... don't change anything there.

Master & Booster:

Earlier Master units from VN to VS commodores are insufficient for the needs of the twin pot calipers, so using the VT master Cylinder is the only true way of getting around this!

on a plastic booster I would change the master cylinder"at the very least" or you will experience a low pedal. Easiest thing to do is fit the 1" fast fill VT master to your plastic booster
To do this the booster needs to come apart and have the front rod that goes into the back of the master cylinder shortened by about 8-10mm Then the bottle off the VS needs to go back onto the VT master (will need to drill and tap a hole in the casting to hold the bottle down. You'll know what I mean when you see it

*** Easier just to come across a complete VT+ master & Booster!

Regards!
