Well i'm watching Today Tonight and it seems that the Gen III has still got some problems with them. One owner has a VT SerII GTS which has had 3 motors and about to lunch another one.Another owner has a VX GTS with the same problems.
Lest hope the later GEN III and GEN IV doesn have these problems.

Im sure that alot of these so called "problems"arent really problems at all. Its because there has been alot of hype and publicity about the gen 3 using oil all the engines are guilty until prooven innocent. What i mean is if an evgine uses the slightest bit of oil th must be stuffed and need replacing......when in all honesty what engine dosent use the tiniest bit of oil ?? as far as i was aware most of the problems was fixed by VX I so i dunno what people are complaining about ??

Well I can only speak from my own experience - I've owned 2 LS1 engined utes, and neither of them have used a drop of oil... and the first one was 80,000 odd k's old when I traded it, so you'd think if it was gonna use oil it would have started by then!
The one I have now is only just over 30,000 kms old but it doesn't use any either. It's a tiny bit rattly when it first starts up but that goes away fairly quickly - if it wasn't then it'd be quite uncommon, almost all of them seem to do that.
But yes I tend to think a small amount of oil usage is OK, and that some of the rebuilds that are being done are unnecessary. If the engine is suffering from major oil usage or from major piston slap then yes, it should be done - but I think some people's expectations are a little bit high.

I think as others have said that most probs were with VT early VX models. I have had no probs with mine(Touch wood) , nor has Trent with his.
Look on LS1.com.au these guys talk about it all the time, heaps of people have had rebuilds/swaps, but not common in VY.
Hope they don't have similar problems with LS2's in new HSV's coz "I just want one"

hmm.... a lot of the minor oil usage with the LS1 i think comes down to how they are driven in the first 1000kms of their life...
if you ask me, and if i owned one from new, i'd throw what holden says out the window about not revving past X rpm, not towing trailers, go easy for the first 1000kms, don't change your oil till its done 10,000kms...
if it was my car i'd drive it home, drop the oil and filter, new stuff, and go for a drive... new piston rings need load to seal perfectly, and going easily on the engine isn't gonna do this... you need big throttle openings to get plenty of ring tension for a perfect seal. so its out to some back roads for me... and a nice drive with plenty of varied load...
i'd come home, drop the oil and filter again...
in the first 1000kms i think i'd prolly go as far as to change the oil maybe 4 or 5 times...
then run it on the dyno...
give me a car run in with the factorys recomendations to compare to and if my car didn't make more power i'd eat its back tyres...
some people though, some get all the luck...

3 engine rebuilds and now 1 brand new engine.
Rebuild No.1 oil consumption, rebuild No.2 excessive piston slap, rebuild No.3 pushrod let go after rebuild No.2 and new engine 2 weeks ago from oil consumption again!
3 clutches last one is aftermarket with billet flywheel and going much better that Holden’s crap one.
Otherwise been really good! Honest!
