VT ignition lock broke. Ignition was on, couldn't turn it off as the extension rod from the back of the barrel lock was snapped off in the ignition switch proper. Couldn't turn motor over. New unassembled barrel cost $42 and numbered new "tumbler" bits had to be matched with those from disassembled old lock and inserted in new. Common practice seems to be to buy one with a key and then to match the electronics of the new key to the car by various turning things on and off in some sequence. This about $50 - $60 and leaves you with two keys instead of one, unless the new key can be cut to suit the old format? As far as I know, the new key is already cut. Simple job to do, one screw removal under the column and unclip the two halves of the column cover and then insert pin in top of barrel to release it. Reassembly needs various bits to be in the "on" position and especially the ignition switch itself on the LH side of the column which can be released to remove the broken bit of shaft and needs to be attached once more in the "on" position for the key barrel rod to enter it when this is inserted. The switch itself cannot be attached once the barrel is in because it has to be swivelled into position which was not a problem when the rod was broken but impossible to do with it intact and in place.
This was a VT year 2000 and other years may be different. (Also someone said models other than VT had to have the steering wheel removed etc.)
