I know a little - I have one myself but I haven't used it for ages.
If it came from mainland NSW was it second hand? It might be an overseas version. The overseas ones that came out before the Australian release will not receive channels on the UHF band because most overseas digitial TV only operates on VHF. The problem is many regional centres (including Tasmania) broadcast in UHF but it would've worked fine in say, Metro Sydney where everything is VHF except SBS.
Sony released a firmware update to make it work on UHF around the time of the Australian release (November 09). Can you check what firmware it has? If it's any less than 1.21 then this is your problem.
If it does have the older firmware then we have a problem, I don't think the firmware can be updated without going through the setup process and actually finding some channels, although I have my original CD with the Australian software on it, maybe I can update it with that.

Click the PlayTV icon in the XMB, scroll around to settings, then click About - it should tell you the version at the top.
I could be completely wrong too, the unit could just be faulty..... and as I said, make sure you have your country set to Australia or it won't work!!
If neither of the above help we can always plug it into mine where I know I can get reception with my existing PlayTV box, that'll quickly tell us whether it's faulty or not.

There's your problem, for sure! It won't work on UHF until you get to version 1.20 or 1.21.... if it was brand new, it must have been really old stock....
Yes you can update it no worries, I was thinking about it this morning, it's not firmware, it's just the software that your PS3 needs to make it all work.
Does it give you the option to update in that box where it tells you the software version? It does on mine (at the bottom) but I am pretty sure that it won't give you that unless you have scanned and successfully found channels.
If it doesn't, that's fine, all you need is the installation disk with 1.20 or later on it... I just happen to have one here somewhere from mine which you can borrow if you like. You're still in Youngtown aren't you - that's only a suburb away from me....
There have been updates come out that are newer than the CD, but once you've installed from the CD and succesfully found some channels you can then update it again over the net to the latest version.

Excellent, glad it's working.
Re the guide, some of those EPGs are bloody hopeless! The only thing I can suggest is go into the time settings on your PS3 and make sure it's set to GMT +10 Hobart and daylight savings is on... that's about the only thing that you can do, if it is setup properly then the problem is probably at Southern Cross's end, theirs is probably set to Queensland time or something! I will have a look at mine later on today and see if it's right.
I have similar issues with 7Mate's EPG on my TV, theirs is almost always wrong, and sometimes up to an hour out.
