hiya guys. i have an aftermarket head unit that im looking to put into my clubby.
the cd player i have ready to put in is only a single deck rather than the double one that is in the clubsport. and isnt very expensive but will still be a MAJOR upgrade from the, more sensitive that frozen balls in winter, eurovox in there atm.

literally hitting a "cats eye" on the road skips the cd and for some strange reason turning right while accelerating seems to jump it too.. and i mean any acceleration.,. even the level you would use when there is a cop going past you. but ill see if thats a problem later.

ive never replaced a head unit before in a car but i have had it done professionally in other cars. have had this head unit in another car with no probs.
just need to know the steps and items requiredl.
i assume a crimper/ plyers/screwdriver and some spare wire and crimps?

and how to actually get the head unit out without scratching around the console...

Hey mate, prettty easy, just a bit of fucking about.
First up you need a stereo remover tool (goes in the two holes at the front of the stez left and right to take off the clips) for this, i made a coat hanger sacrifice its life.. haha.
Push this in on both sides untill stez clicks forward, then just slide backwards.
unplug power, and arial and throw old stereo to the tip!
Youll need a pocket to sit below your new stereo if its single din instead of standard double, can get these at most auto parts shops, also if u want steering wheel controls to still work you need to wire in an adapter box, when i had a later model commo, i used one called "the cat" which worked a treat.
Apart from that you need crimpers, wire connectors/ strippers etc, and a bit of patience. Then its just a matter of matching the wires up.
If you need any assistance/ someone to show you how, sing out, i'll come give ya a hand :)

ok well ive figured out how to get it out...
small piece of steel (coathanger cut into four equal pieces 10-15cm long) into each of the small holes on the side of the player.
i now have it half out..
when i pulled it out i found 2 things connecting it..
firstly there was what seemed to be a power cord.
the seccond being a mash of wires into one plastic white clip like thing plugged directly into the back of the HU.

the first cord i took out.
and so far cannot seem to be able to get the second one (the plastic thing with all the wires) out.
the cd player still works fine... lights everything.
cant seem to get any radio but i very rarely use radio but i think that first cord might be connection to the antenna.

with the plastic bit with the wires am i able to take it out at the HU end or do i need to follow the wires to a point where i can easily cut them and then reconnect them to the new HU.
havent looked at the back of the other head unit i have but from memory i think it has the same sort of thing there...

ok yeah got all those tools so should be good on that front.
just checking out the other head unit i have
for how im gonna go about the next step.

OK, so u have taken the arial out, the big white plug with all the wires should have a bendy bit you press, which releases the clip, and out it comes. 99.95% of the time you will need to do some cut and shut to attach the new one as plugs will be slightly different

oh and the vt series one doesnt have the steering wheel controls (think the r8 did but not the standard clubby) so i dont have to worry about them fortunately.

edit - - yeah the little bendy clip bit at the bottom. been pressing it and pull on the clip and stuff and it wont pry loose. most likely a matter of needing to play a bit as it possibly havent been taken out for 10 years +
but i dont think its the unit that came in it as in the manual the PIN has been crossed out and a new one there.
also there is a note on the top of it which sounds like maintenance from dealer where it may have been replaced.

Whats the headunit your putting in?
Aerpro do plug in kits to suit most headunits and cars. Multiplug that plugs into the loom in the car and all you have to do is join the loom from the headunit to the new Aerpro loom. Really easy and they come with instructions as to which wire does what.
Harness

See that link and have a browse for a facia that puts a pocket under where your new headunit will go.

its a jvc that i got for my old vp commodore.
the speakers and headunit were really clear/good so when the vp went to the scrapyard after a crash i kept them ready for later time....

JVC KD-G635

edit. that sounds like it could be really helpful. anywhere local that has them or would i have to order one or what?

mmm had a look on the website. only problemm is for the
Holden Commodore VT- VX Wiring Harness 1997 - 01
it says 1 * 14 pin... the one that went into the back of the stock head unit was 18 pin. with 15 wires going into it.
and the jvc one that plugs into the back of the new head unit is completely diff shape.

mmm
see im not sure which one i would be needing.

http://s205.photobuc...s/Car%20stereo/
in that album there i have a couple of pics of the plugs.
if i could find a site that lists all the diff cords which one is which for the standard head unit i would just link them up as i have all the info on the jvc but the colours of the JVC and Eurovox ones dont match to each other.

edit found this thread.
http://forums.tascom...10003-vt-commy/
would this also apply?

by the sound of things thats just an excec or similar. would it still have same colours etc?

thinking i might just go the messy way and just cut the wires and match them up with what i think is right.

only thing is i dont have enough crimpers (the ones where you put one wire in each end of the rubber thing then crimp it shut) but i have a few of the other bits (that i can replace later to make it look neater) where you put wire in one end and crimp it shut. then tie the other end around the "O" shape of metal out the other end of it. would i be right to use those for now and then next week once i get some more of the others go back and replace.

i wanna get the new one in being i already have the old one out.
otherwise ill leave it till i get the other bits and put the old one back in for now.

or another option can i actually take them out of the harness without cutting them?
mmm i wonder if anywhere open on a sunday might have them harness's from (or similar to) aerpro

Best to do it propperly in one go mate, don't want the drama of a loose wire or something shorting out and causing more issues later.
Cutting and shutting the harness is easy enough, but you need to know exactly what wires do what.
Slip down to supercheap in burnie, they have heaps of those adapter cables on the shelf, there should be one there to suit :)

ok went down to super cheap and got one of the "holden (vt) to iso" adaptors. cut off the end plugs. and have them all stripped. now just gotta crimp them together and should all be good. best thing is i can do it all inside then just clip in the adaptor in the car... havent got anything for the second din yet but i thinkn it should sit there for now till next payday to get the rest done neatly... (gotta save some money for the weekend in hobart :P)

ok. gave it a test run with power cords and front right speaker plugged...
test worked so now i just gotta crimp the rest and maybe tape them over?
they dont seem very sturdy (cause im not very good at them...)
so im thinking wrap roun with sticky tape?
