Ive been pre-approved on a 15 grand loan so im looking at two v8 toys

1st, 1997 VT 5.0 Clubsport auto 210kms

2nd 2001 VX 5.7 SS Auto 157kms

Is the Clubby a better buy @ $13000 or 15000 for the SS. Im thinking the clubby cause of its name but im liking the 5.7 v8 over the 5.0 for performance and ecnomony but clubby due to its name and status

So the 5.0 is a old cast iron what the main problems with the engine in this era, 5.7 i know most problems im more upto date with these engines

either way i'll be taking a V8 option

Cheers Brett

As strange as this sounds, go the VT Clubsport. You get those comfy Coulsen seats.

Bugger that, go the ls1.

5Ls are slugs and being a fat a*s VT doesn't help at all.

Depends what your really after, power in the long term, or just a nice sounding cruiser that chews fuel?

Insuranse wise, i'd say go the SS, the HSV tag instantly makes insurance more exxy, but i've got a soft spot for the 5Lt over the LS1..
My opinion, drive one of each, like for a decent long drive, then see which one you like driving most

This.

They're two completely different engines... the LS1 is a slug down low and doesn't sound as nice as the 5ltr either. SS is also not as nice looking as the clubby or as comfortable inside. But you can get higher numbers out of the SS for relatively low cost and it will be cheaper to insure.

I bet the Clubby probably feels 'seat of the pants' faster getting off the line, you might actually enjoy it more.

as a satisfied owner of a 5L vt clubsport id say go that one :P
tbh in the piics the clubsport looks nicer.

Do you like a car that really goes. or one that goes very well and sounds much better? LS1's dont sound anywhere near as nice without a lot of $$$ put into it. The 5L + a 500 aftermarket exhaust kit and it sounds awesome.

other thing is. HSV adds instant $1,000 to any claim excess. and is very hard to insure. many commpanies just hear HSV and say NO
im with just car. they are best option i found. but im also a young driver with a hsv so it was harder for me than others.

would be nice to have another vt clubbty owner here :P

did a few quotes and they all say call for more information GRRRR darn insurance places. Im thinking clubsport, Kays dont bother me that much cars gotta be driven + ive seen 5.0 v8s in the statesmans and caprices over 300kms and still pull strong, Im sure which ever i get i'll be happy but sounds like clubsports will be the better choice just for the name sake and resale in the long term

yeah only 3 people would actually give me a quote even after talking to them on phone/in person.
aami commbank and justcar.
aami was 4500 and would be at market value of 9 grand for the car as thats what their standard sale price is (cause not many vt clubbys in good nic now)
commbank was 3500. dont know what insured value.
justcar was 1400 and agreed value of purchase price ($16000 i got mine for).

but these quotes wont be same for you. i have made a claim in last three years which makes mine sky high and im only 19 so a driver under age of 21 = hard to get insurance.

If you are planning on leaving the thing fairly well alone (mod-wise) then get the ClubSport. If you want to get more power out of it the cheapest and easiest option in the LS1 my a huge margin.

As an owner of a 5.0L VT I can say they go well, fuel economy is around 14L/100km round town and 10-11 on the highway, and they sound good.

Go the VX, get a cam, diff gears and stall, done!

Twin 3"s and it will sound great and have it all over a 5L

304s are barely better than V6s imo, just sound better.

all in all we can ramble and rant all day about the pros anc cons. but its up to you... which one do you feel more connection too. which one can you see yourself in on a sunny day sunglases on, windows down and cruising... or on a wet day driving through town for a look around. go with your gut.

mr vtclubby can i ask you why your insurance is so badly priced?

are you in a really bogan suburb, parking on the street?
do you have a poor driving record with loads of infringements?
do you use the car for business use?
are you 17 years old?

i'm with shannons now (moved from justcar)... $1350 a year... nudging $40k agreed value... every single mod is covered... really cheap excess... first rights on the wreck... did you try shannons?

anyway, back to the original post...
you want a cool every day cruiser that'll go hard and be nice...?

go the VX SS... put some 19's on it, take a few inches out of the ride height, a good exhaust, mafless tune and OTR...
you'll blaze in 8 - 9L/100km on the highway, 15L/100km in town...

if you want to go faster, you can get these things into the 12's for under 5k if you spend your money WISELY... $7500 would do it using new parts through the whole car...
what does it cost to get an NA stock stroke 5 litre into the 12's??........... (aspirated, no boost, no gas, pump fuel, full weight)

5L into the 12's.... no idea. but id guess a lot.
as for my insurance i have one previous claim at fault and am 19 YO. stated those both above. shannons wont insure young drivers so i cant do that.
parked off street in a safe suburb and used personal only. prior to that one crash i had car insured for 400 a year.
oh and if your at 1350 and im at 1400 what did you do to get yours high?
value of the vehicle has no change for the cost of insurance. my annual insurance is same price with my vt clubby (agreed value 15990) as my vx berlina (agreed value at 7500) basicly half price.

but to be honest. im not actually paying 1400 a year. as one of the justcar insurance options i chose to "adJUST" by upping my excess and lowering my premium. so im only paying 1100 a year...

anyway back on track another important thing you may want to look into is... the dealerships. assuming they are both dealer cars. what kind of rep do they have? did they spray it with mr sheen to get it looking clean long enough to sell. etc
